SMC (Sheet Molding Compound), composite materials made of fiberglass impregnated with specially formulated resin compositions, are typically based on polyester, vinyl ester or phenol/melamine. After a “maturing” period, SMC is form pressed in a heated steel tool in vertical hydraulic presses.

Glass fiber reinforced polyester is used for a variety of purposes. Products manufactured in SMC differs from other processes in terms of improved mechanical properties and smooth surface on both sides. This method is used when good dimensional repeatability and material properties is desired. Because of the higher form tooling costs, this method best lends itself to a relatively large production run compared to other composite processes.
